When the dough forms together from crumbly, then it's time to separate into dough balls and place on parchment paper lined sheet. Make balls a few inches round and place a few inches apart on sheet.
Press down on balls with a fork or flatten using the bottom of a cup. Add sprinkles if you want before placing in the oven. Bake for minutes or until edges of the cookies start to turn a golden color. When done, remove from oven and place on wired rack.

Margarine is still a lot trickier to handle when baking. If I were using margarine, I would have to use the method of patting down the dough onto a cookie sheet and slicing it into wedges. The bottom line: For most people, I can see them still choosing butter over margarine for shortbread recipes because there is still a taste difference and butter is much easier to work with.
It becomes more solid so you can grate it into the mixture similar as you would butter. A: Lacks flavor compared to the other 2. Once it looks like cookie dough roll it into a ball and place on a floured surface. After rolling out your dough cut them into shapes or rectangles or whatever your cutting them into. A idea for people doing rectangles, use a fork and put holes in them like the picture. Put your cut dough onto a baking tray lined with grease proof paper.
Bake for 10 minutes.
