Congestion charge who is exempt

The charge is not in operation on Christmas Day. You can pay online up to 90 days in advance, on the day of travel or by midnight the next charging day. As well as online, you can pay the Congestion Charge via CC Auto Pay, by telephone and even by text message once you've registered online.

You will need to pay this fine within 28 days. People living within the congestion zone receive a 90 per cent discount on the charge, although you must be a registered resident to qualify. London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, said the Congestion Charge price increase is a response to the "unprecedented challenges" posed to the city by coronavirus. These challenges have caused the capital's public transport system to carry only "a fraction of" the number of passengers seen during normal times.

Mayor Khan added : "While capacity on the network needs to be preserved for those people who need it most, we can't allow journeys that were previously taken on public transport to be replaced with car trips. Driving into London is being strongly discouraged, and public transport only to be used "when absolutely necessary," travellers are being encouraged to walk or cycle to get about.

TfL's 'Streetspace' project has seen and extra 19,m2 of space set aside for walking and cycling, much of it portioned off from roads that would otherwise have been available to cars. The major intends "to make central London one of the largest car-free zones in any capital city in the world". Since 17 February , motorists wanting to drive into London at peak times on weekdays have had to pay a Congestion Charge for the privilege.
